Dr. Yarden Fanta-Vagenshtein

Dr. Yarden Fanta-VagenshteinDr. Yarden Fanta-Vagenshtein’s captivating story began in a remote Ethiopian village as an illiterate girl shepherding her family’s sheep. When she was a young teen, she and her family daringly sought new lives. Often barefoot, with one of her twin two-year-old sisters on her back, Yarden walked at night more than 450 miles across the desert. Following a historic airlift to Israel, she enrolled in school for the first time at age 14 and eventually became the first Ethiopian woman to earn a doctorate in Israel. Today, her research focuses on literacy and immigrant populations, and her remarkable life’s journey inspires audiences around the world.
