2020 commUNITY Mitzvah Day

Join us for a day of hands-on services experiences throughout Greater MetroWest. Activities available for all ages and stages throughout the community – choose the activity that is best for your family. Which mitzvah will YOU find meaningful?!

Mitzvah Day Projects

1-3 p.m.
Daughters of Israel, 1155 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange

Help inventory, sort, and pack surplus medical supplies to be distributed through public health missions worldwide to help victims of natural disasters and international conflicts. Join us to be part of the amazing effort to sustain global health and help save lives.

Multi-generational – appropriate for families with children in grades Pre-K-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.         

2-4 p.m.
Gottesman RTW Academy, 146 Dover Chester Rd., Randolph

Team up and work together to build bicycles for NJY campers with special needs and JESPY House clients.

Appropriate for families with children ages 11-14

2 locations:
10:30-11:30 a.m.
JCC MetroWest, 760 Northfield Ave., West Orange

2-3 p.m.
JCC of Central NJ, 1391 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains

We will buddy-up those who are not yet comfortable with using ride-sharing technology (Uber/Lyft) with those who are in-the-know for an interactive training. Sign up to share your knowledge or to learn how to utilize share-ride services. Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in learning how to use a ride-sharing service.

Appropriate for adults ages 18+. All who attend will be asked to fill out a waiver.

11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Aidekman Jewish Community Campus, 901 Route 10, Whippany

Join 250+ teens from all around Greater MetroWest who come together for this international day of Jewish youth service. Choose from 11 different mitzvah projects taking place at this one location!

Appropriate for teens ages 12-18. Special parent volunteer opportunities available at drop-off and pick-up from 11 a.m.-noon and from 2-3 p.m.

9:30-11:30 a.m.
Greater Newark Conservancy, 446 Hawthorne Ave., Newark

Get your hands dirty at the Greater Newark Conservancy. Activities include tending to the farm and much more, all to benefit the Newark community. Dress for mess!

Appropriate for anyone ages 11+, children must be accompanied by an adult

11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Temple Beth Shalom, 193 E. Mount Pleasant Ave., Livingston

Cook hot meals to feed families in need, assemble and pack backpacks of food for families receiving free public-school lunch, and more to benefit Toni’s Kitchen, Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and Connect for Community. Participants are asked to bring: peanut butter (no glass jars), pasta, tuna, pasta sauce (no glass jars), oatmeal/healthy cereal, rice, beans, snack bars, raisins.

12:15-2:15 p.m.
Congregation Beth Israel, 18 Shalom Way, Scotch Plains

Create and fill packages of kosher-for-Passover food to benefit local clients of Jewish Family Service of Central NJ.

9:30 a.m.-noon
Temple Har Shalom, 104 Mount Horeb Rd., Warren

We will be baking and braiding challah and making “To-Go Bags” for Bound Brook Soup Kitchen clients. Participants should bring packets of tuna fish, individually wrapped rolls of toilet paper, and mini-bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body lotion.

Appropriate for kindergarten age and up

1-2:30 p.m.
Temple Ner Tamid, 936 Broad St., Bloomfield

Assemble feminine hygiene packs for the NCJW/Essex Period.Project and the Human Needs Pantry. We will also learn about menstrual inequity and how to help those in our community who do not have access to feminine hygiene products. Participants are asked to bring: packs of tampons, menstrual pads, and/or clean cosmetic bags (In addition to registering for the program, please sign up for what you will bring here.)

Appropriate for teens and adults

1-3 p.m.
Congregation Beth Hatikvah, 36 Chatham Rd., Summit

Participate in three types of packing projects: stationary/stamps and other supplies for First Friends of NJ; personal care products for women for Bridges Outreach; small children’s toys and activities for GRACE of Summit.

Appropriate for all ages

10 a.m. - noon
Temple Shalom, 215 S. Hillside Dr., Succasunna

Construct El Al airplane from donated food items and pack personal care bags for the homeless. All items will be delivered to Roxbury Food Pantry and NourishNJ. Participants are asked to bring: personal care items such as toothpaste and toothbrushes and travel-size soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and tissue packets.
