Our hearts ache for the people of Baltimore. And to the Jewish community there, with whom so many of us have deep ties and fond connections, we send special warm wishes.

My colleague Marc Terrill, a mensch and great leader, updated us this week on what his federation is doing in light of the tragic events there. They’re working with local partners to repair damage and repair their community. And they're showing the best of our values.
Like Marc’s dedicated lay and professional team, we pray for calm and resolve.

• Their federation is in touch with the mayor’s office on evolving needs, and they’re communicating with area non-profits and faith-based organizations who work directly with those affected by the violence and rioting.  Their federation will be an active partner in raising funds to aid in restoration and recovery, acting as a united Jewish community through their federation.

• Their federation is promoting volunteerism in the community. They’ll coordinate with the city management and list opportunities like delivering food, toiletries, supplies, and more. The thoughtfulness and range of what they’re putting together is inspiring.

• They’re looking at in-kind gifts and services that are needed.

• They’re thinking responsibly about community safety and security, and coordinating where needed.

If you’re a Baltimore resident, I hope you take part in this inspiring effort. And if you’re here in Greater MetroWest, I hope you’re inspired by our friends’ example of what Jewish federations can and should do in times of challenge.
