For persons with developmental disabilities and their families, ordinary life is redefined.

Fortunately, there is not much ordinary about JSDD either, or the work it does to support men and women with developmental disabilities and their families.

Staff members work to help residents achieve the greatest possible independence and support and encourage residents to engage with their local Jewish and general community in meaningful ways.

JSDD opened it first kosher home for adults with developmental disabilities in 1989 in Millburn. Today, the agency supports 43 men and women in 12 homes in Essex and Morris Counties providing 24-hour-a-day assistance so that they may participate fully in community life.

JSDD also provides Shabbat experiences, information and referral, and continuing education opportunities to adults with disabilities who live with family or in other agency homes.

JSDD’s WAE (Wellness, Arts & Enrichment) Center in West Orange is an alternative learning, creative arts and spiritual and wellness program that promotes the sharing of ideas in an atmosphere of unconditional acceptance. Courses currently available include fine arts, painting, multi-media arts, yoga, pilates, tai chi, film appreciation, theater, nutrition, cooking, creative writing, horticulture and much more.
