Hillel at Rutgers University in New Brunswick , as well as at Drew University in Madison, serves Jewish undergraduate and graduate students, providing services, religious activities, educational programs, cultural events, and social opportunities, as well as counseling services in the context of Jewish values.
Rutgers Hillel is the center for Jewish life on campus. It reaches out to students “on their own terms,” i.e., with openness to novel approaches and respect for the spectrum of affiliations in terms of cultural identification as well as religious practice.
The first aim of Hillel is to be the same thing to every Jewish student, “a welcoming gateway” to the organized Jewish community.
The second aim is to be different things to every Jewish student. To accomplish this, Hillel actively encourages individual students and the community as a whole to listen to the ideas of others and to incorporate meaningful innovations into programs, events, and services.
Hillel is committed to a pluralistic vision of Judaism, one that takes in all movements. Thus, the organization embraces all Jewish students on campus, regardless of background or specific Jewish affiliation. Participation in Hillel is open. No membership is required.
Through its programming, organizational evolving, and active seeking of what Jewish students think and wonder and need, Hillel strives to give Jewish students the means to “own” their Judaism through “stylistic, exciting and accessible events” held at each of the five Rutgers campuses in the New Brunswick area.
