The objective of the Social Justice Associate is to bring quality programing and advocacy to Greater MetroWest that will educate and engage our community to fight racism and antisemitism; join coalitions already involved in this work, advocate for federal and state legislation that addresses criminal justice, voting rights (and other) reforms and trains individuals to be proactive advocates against hate and antisemitism.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
This new staff position will be part of our Community Relations Council, the government affairs, public policy, and advocacy department of our Federation. It will help tie together the many resources that now exist, through our Jewish Federation, state and federal agencies, interfaith partners, the Anti-Defamation League, law enforcement and other community organizations.

Programming:

  • Engage the Jewish community in racial justice dialogue through educational programming designed to lead to action.
  • Create opportunities through forums, roundtables and one-on-one meetings to listen to civic leaders, clergy, colleagues and others.
  • Identify, engage and amplify the voices of Jews of color in our GMW community.
  • Collaborate with the Holocaust Council to design new programs focusing on understanding antisemitism and how to combat the rise of hate.

Relationship building:

  • Build and deepen relationships between communities of color and the Greater MetroWest Jewish community.
  • Identify non-profits that serve the black community, from national organizations like the NAACP and Urban League, to local organizations in Newark and surrounding towns, which provide volunteering opportunities.
  • Work with interfaith groups to provide dialogue and programming that foster understanding and support.

Policy & Advocacy:

  • Develop policy resolutions around issues like combating hate, criminal justice reform, voting rights and affordable housing initiatives. Join other community partners to advocate for an anti-hate and racial justice agenda.
  • Act as a “first responder” when incidents of antisemitism occur in our community and help direct our responses, both at the leadership and grassroots levels.
  • Work with Federation’s Social Media Manager to Maintain CRC’s social media, specifically Twitter and Facebook, with a focus on advocacy, community engagement and Jewish communal relations.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with advocacy organizations across NJ on issues of importance to Federation and its partners on issues related to social justice and fighting hate and antisemitism.
  • Focus on communal relationship building between Federation and its local, state, and federal elected representatives and community leaders.
  • Assist CRC Director with planning state and federal advocacy missions and other events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Three to five years professional experience in communal or government affairs.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Must have knowledge of and experience with public policy and Jewish organizational life.
  • Established relationships with interfaith and communal organizations a plus.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority.
  • Ability to work effectively on a bipartisan basis.
  • Knowledge of Jewish community, culture, heritage, traditions, and Jewish communal services preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer software skills and use of technology, including in all Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
