Join Temple Sinai and Congregation Beth HaTikvah to hear from Mark Hetfield, President and CEO of HIAS. Mr. Hetfield will discuss the significant changes in U.S. immigration policy that include the banning of immigrants from entire countries, new limitations on granting asylum, and family separation. In this new climate, what are our Jewish moral responsibilities to refugees and asylum seekers? Mr. Hetfield will propose a Jewish response anchored in Jewish law and Jewish history.
An expert in refugee and immigration policy, Mr. Hetfield ‘s 28 year career began with HIAS in Rome, as well as posts to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Washington, D.C. and Haiti. Mr. Hetfield has led the transformation of HIAS from an organization focused on Jewish immigrants, to a global agency guided by Jewish values that assists and resettles refugees of all faiths and ethnicities, and is a major partner of the U.N. Refugee Agency and the U.S. Department of State.
