Making an Impact

Super Sunday is your opportunity to be a SuperStar

I volunteer for Super Sunday because…

Picture this: big rooms filled with long tables and chairs. Banners everywhere. Balloons. A big tote board. Boxes to collect pledge cards. Coffee flows freely. Children eagerly hand out raffle tickets and a never-ending supply of candy.

On the tables are telephones. And at the telephones are people, hundreds at one time, making a wonderful noise. It’s the noise of connection to our community that we hope endures for a lifetime. It’s the noise called Super Sunday.

Super Sunday, the annual all-day UJA phonathon fund-raiser and community celebration, will take place on Sunday, December 7, at both the Wilf Jewish Community Campus in Scotch Plains and the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany. It’s your chance to be a superstar for your community. There will be family activities throughout the day, social action projects, and once again we’ll cap off the day with hundreds of teens and college students making calls in the evening. Our Rishonim (young Israeli emissaries) will join this group, providing an Israel education component and adding lots of fun to the evening. Take a minute to enjoy this brief video they made.

Five of the volunteers you will see all day at Super Sunday are the chairs. They are Ken Rotter of Westfield, Ron Silbermann of Randolph, Steve Weisbrot of Scotch Plains, and Jessica and Aaron Wolff of Denville.

Federation recently asked the chairs to complete the statement “I volunteer for Super Sunday because…” Their answers, some very brief, others longer, come from the heart.

Our Rishonim (young Israeli emissaries) also want you to know why they are volunteering for Super Sunday. We invite you to enjoy this video and  also share why you are volunteering for Super Sunday. Please e-mail Federation at azaccardo@jfedgmw.org. Answers will be posted on the Super Sunday website.

Ken Rotter

I volunteer for Super Sunday because Israel and the most vulnerable among us need us now more than ever.

Ron Silbermann

I volunteer for Super Sunday because it is important to give back to the community and attempt to make the world a better place. Being the son of two Holocaust survivors, I was raised with this value. Super Sunday is an AWESOME day that concentrates on raising money to help those less fortunate. But Super Sunday is not only about raising money – it’s a community day as well where folks from all over Greater MetroWest gather together in unison to help others and build Jewish community. I have a nine-year-old daughter, Talia…I volunteer to set an example for her so she can learn the values of giving back to the community.

Aaron Wolff

I volunteer for Super Sunday because there is a true sense of community and working for the greater good to help others. For me a successful day is not measured by the number of dollars raised (although important) but the feeling of community. To see the community come together — whether it is for the family-friendly activities, to volunteer to support the calling activities, or to be a caller — Super Sunday creates that sense of community.

Jessica Wolff

I volunteer for Super Sunday because it helps establish a connection to our community that we hope endures for a lifetime. It is a time to come together, participate in mitzvot (good deeds), and help ourselves. Beyond the monetary benefits that many children in our community receive through the funds raised on Super Sunday, those children that participate in the day get to experience first-hand what it means to be part of a community and to give to others. Plus, the family-friendly programming is amazing.

Steve Weisbrot

I volunteer for Super Sunday because it is the one day all year where we can get together as a community and work together, shoulder-to-shoulder, with a singular goal in mind. As a first-time chair and father to two wonderful young children, I am trying to focus my efforts on increasing awareness among young families in our community. I consider it my duty to educate my peer group about the breadth and depth of good work that we do here in GMW so that when Super Sunday rolls around, they already know why they should want to be involved.
