New Jersey Jewish News (9/14/16)
THIS EDITION OF New Jersey Jewish News marks a milestone: It is the last to be published under the leadership of our newspaper’s current editorial, production, design, and business staffs and board of trustees. Beginning next week, the legacy that began when the first edition of The Jewish News was published on Jan. 3, 1947, will be carried forward by our new publisher, the Jewish Week Media Group.

Jewish Family Service of MetroWest has been awarded a grant by the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey to administer the Wise Aging initiative. The aim of the program, which is a partnership of 12 local synagogues plus JCC MetroWest, is to use Jewish and secular texts to help adults in their 60s and 70s discover their intellectual and spiritual potentials and for seniors to view aging as a time of wisdom and self-realization.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer stepped up to an 800-pound gjallarhorn and exhaled with all he had to launch the festivities that officially inaugurated the team’s $1.1 billion stadium.

A performance by the Maccabeats will be the musical highlight of the first Morris County Jewish Festival on Sunday, Sept. 18, 1-4 p.m. at the Gottesman RTW Academy in Randolph. The aim of the event is to demonstrate that “Morris County is a great place to live Jewishly,” said Mara Glauberg of Randolph.

Some 75 people gathered at JCC MetroWest’s Camp Deeny Riback in Flanders on Aug. 8 for the official dedication of the new pool in memory of Florine Peck. The $800,000 aquatic facility, designed and constructed by New Jersey-based Green Outlook, features a heated pool with swim lanes and a slide, as well as landscaped open areas for play. The new pool was in use for the entire 2016 summer camp session.

This summer, New Jersey Y Camps launched Susie Fishbein and Friends Culinary Institute. Campers had a choice of 14 sessions of cooking workshops, held in a brand-new, state-of-the-art kitchen located at the border between Camps Shoshanim and Nesher, the Orthodox girls’ and coed camps, respectively.

Armed with a $25,000 nine-month federal grant, the Jewish Family Service of MetroWest is seeking volunteers for a program that advises senior citizens on the intricacies of Medicare.

When the 2016 Summer Olympics open Friday, we’ll of course be cheering the American athletes — all 555 of them — and we’ll be rooting for Israel, too, which this year is sending its largest ever cohort to Rio.

Dr. Paul Winkler, who served as executive director of the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education for 40 years and achieved national renown in the field, has died. Winkler, who died July 12 at the age of 79, became the first executive director of the commission in 1975, beginning as a volunteer and serving until illness forced him to retire in May.
