Holocaust Council’s Annual Exhibit Has a New Twist
All are welcome to join us at the opening reception of “Holocaust Heroes: Fierce Females – Tapestries and Sculpture by Linda Stein” on Thursday, February 1 as part of the Holocaust Council’s signature exhibit, “From Memory to History: Faces and Voices of the Holocaust.” The exhibit will be on display at the Alex Aidekman Family Jewish Community Campus in Whippany from January 27 through May 3. The opening reception features speaker Professor David E. Fishman, author of The Paper Smugglers.
“This exhibit is a meaningful way of commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of April 1943,” says Holocaust Council Director Barbara Wind. “In that battle, a small, poorly-equipped group of young people without professional training fought against one of the most powerful armies in history. Remarkably, they held their own for nearly a month, until the Nazis, who had suffered considerable losses, overpowered the ghetto with bombs and flamethrowers. The heroism of those Jews spread and inspired uprisings in many ghettoes and camps.”
“Holocaust Heroes” is an exhibit of tapestries and sculptures created by Linda Stein, an award-winning New York City artist, educator, and activist. The women in the tapestries are examples of the many and varied forms of resistance, including armed resistance, who not only fought themselves, but encouraged and empowered others to fight for liberation.
This year, the signature From Memory to History exhibit will feature a new collection of artifacts. Some of these are on loan from Greater MetroWest native Jennifer Newman Weitzner. Others are gifts from the estate of John and Miriam Less. In addition, there will be several exciting programs on the theme of resistance, including a screening of The Defiant Requiem with producer Patti Askwith Kenner and conductor Murry Sidlin.
